je suis...

I'm currently reading of human bondage by w. somerset maugham and it is truly fantastic. at this point in the novel, phillip is in art school in france. through some fellow expatriate friends, he meets an older english drunkard who has knocked elbows with the finest thinkers and artists of the time. in a recent conversation, he says

"je suis venu au monde très jeune dans un temps très vieux."

although I do not know much french, I roughly translated this to mean "I came into (the) world too young in a time too old." according to wikiquote, the line actually means "I came into the world very young in a very old age" and was originally written by erik satie, a french composer who lived in the late 19th to early 20th century. I believe the book cited another source, but unfortunately I don't have it on me to check. I think I prefer my definition.

I'll be posting another selection from of human bondage on criticism versus creation.
