the point of exclamation

ben yagoda at the ny times shares his opinion of the exclamation post in online writing. my favorite part of the column was the discussion of the differences between "?!" and "!?" as an admitted writer of the former, I had not given much thought to the possibility of using the latter to emphasize shock before curiosity - if those can even be considered the emotions represented by the punctuation marks. yagoda included this quote to compare the two pairings:

“The smiley!? That bastard love child of Inchoate Thought and Lazy Imprecision?! Heaven preserve us.”

I also enjoy any history lesson - albeit brief - on the interrobang (seen at right).
