humanism

just read an interesting repost on bigthink about humanism, in which adam lee responds to the question "does the average person need religion in his/her life?" while I'm not sure I'd consider myself a humanist, it is an inspired piece about looking for value and joy in any life without looking forward to reward after death. it's obviously a bit critical of mass religion, but the criticisms feel fair compared to others I've read.

Instead of placing all our hope of happiness in the future, we should seek it in the present. That's what humanism is all about! Every day should be a joy to us. We should be grateful every day for the opportunity to be alive and to make the most of our time... we should seek to live life with a sense of joy and wonder, and that is just as true for janitors and sewer workers as it is for famous authors and scientists.
